FedEx Forum Food Truck Fridays

News
We've been working with Kandace Stewart of the Memphis Grizzlies on improving their Food Truck Friday events in the summer. Lately after meeting with one promoter after another to do relationship repair, due to years of neglect and apathy by the old organization, there are two things we hear over and over from professional event planners: (more…)

Meeting with Rhodes College

News
I had a meeting this morning at Rhodes College with staff representing the offices of Student Activities, Athletic Events and Alumni Affairs. They were loving the message--a wide range of food trucks with unique worldwide international menus and excellent presentations. Just very excited and eager to bring out trucks now that they have an easy way to source them. Rhodes will be calling us for all their gigs and bringing food trucks out a lot more often.

Run Off From Broad Ave.

News
A couple of us were vending Broad Ave. Arts District last night and one of the restaurants had the police run us off. Restaurants are within their rights to do this if we are parked too close according to the food truck ordinance. The definition of "too close" varies according to what part of town we're in, at that location it's within 300 feet. We were parked about 125 feet away from the restaurant, in fact we weren't even on the same block. Food trucks vend on Broad all the time and they've never been too fussy about the 300 foot rule, in fact the Arts District has its own food truck POC and we thought we add to the atmosphere of the neighborhood. We thought both the public and…

Meeting with Shelby Farms

News
Ken had a good meeting with Alex Bien of Shelby Farms Park Conservancy. Alex is now the food truck POC. We discussed food trucks vending at Starry Nights this year, and about bringing back the Sunday food truck rodeos full strength like they were before the massive Shelby Farms construction spree the past two years. This looks like it is going to happen, the question is where to do it. I'd like to hold it to 4-5 trucks or so but the location we used to use on the little peninsula/boat ramp is still too small now to accommodate the event. I have a couple locations in mind and Alex has some ideas as well. I'm going to let him get through Starry Nights (it is an incredibly grueling event…

Meeting with Health Department

News
MFTA had a constructive meeting with Ernest Benson of Environmental Health and Safety (Health Department). HD would like to remind all food truck operators that your six month inspections are due. You should not wait for the HD to contact you, you should call and schedule an inspection yourself. It annoys the HD that they have to chase us down when we all know we have to have an inspection around May and another around November. To make it easier, the HD is scheduling multiple food truck inspections at Tiger Lane between 10:00 and 3:00, Monday through Thursday. This way we don't have to go to the HD on Jefferson and find parking, etc. and if you do it at Tiger Lane you can probably sail through the inspection in…

Food Trucks at Germantown Park

News, Uncategorized
Ken met with Gwen Singleton at Germantown Park, which is the office park across the street from Agricenter. They've been trying to recruit trucks for a long time but according to the POC the trucks who have tried vending there have had disappointing sales. It's a formula for failure we see over and over: trucks with no strong organization behind them pick out a site--try it once and do poorly--try it a second time to give it a fair chance and do poorly--then never go back. The fact is that one by one, food trucks can not sustain an effort like this long enough for customers to learn we are there each day. No single food truck is strong enough on its own to build interest at a site like…
