Levitt Shell Sunday Rodeos Are Go

News
Operators: Director of the Levitt Shell, Anne Pitts, has approved Sunday food truck rodeos. I'm meeting with Silver Michaels within the next few days to iron out details. What I think will happen: four trucks each Sunday; can vend from lunchtime on through the end of each Sunday concert in the Levitt Shell Concert Series which is around 10:00 p.m.; there will be a site fee of probably $35 plus trucks will furnish approximately 10 entrees each for "backstage" food which is for cast, crew and staff. Sysco Account Opened

News
We got the Sysco account opened. This will let food trucks be able to buy from Sysco even if you do not have an account with them--we're all too little for them to want to fool with us one by one but as a group they will pay attention. You'll have access to their online catalog. When you're ready to order, you'll pay MFTA with a debit card, and we'll pay Sysco immediately in turn. You can pick up or have your order delivered if you have access to a commercial space. They will not deliver to a residence. This is especially useful for things you use a lot of when you need a reliable source (as opposed to Restaurant Depot which has chronic, severe inventory control problems that are…

FedEx Forest Hill Notes

News
I talked to the POC at FedEx today, they are very happy with the trucks they've been getting and they want to continue. We'll be booking March and April in a few days. I know a couple of you weren't happy with your sales out there but January was devastating for all venues and you all know it. The most recent two trucks to vend there were both over [operators only --ed.] I believe and we did [...] today despite a steady rain. Once the weather is even half decent that site is going to consistently rock. Also they are going to start doing more lunchtime parties where FedEx pays for the entrees and staff eat for free. Lynnie's Links did this for them as a super bowl party and…

Germantown Park

News
This is the office complex across the street from Agricenter (site of Stanley Perrin's defunct Wednesday rodeos). The property manager is being great, they are enthusiastic about marketing us and they want this to work. We're starting with a single truck each Wednesday but we can add trucks or days if the demand justifies throughout the summer. I think this site has great potential. Site is very strict about certs, do not take a date if you can't send me a COI. Also need a picture menu if at all possible which the property manager will distribute to all tenants. If you take a date then SHOW UP, do not cancel on us, it puts their marketing effort to waste if you do this. Like most of our events you…

Memphis Public Library Meeting

News
Ken met with Stacey Smith and Gay Cain of Memphis Public Library last week. We made two proposals to them--we had already worked with Stacey Smith when we were feeding people staying at the City-run warming shelters during the cold weather so we were able to go in as an organization with some credibility and a warm welcome. --Food trucks weekly at the main library on Poplar. This would be Tuesdays or Wednesdays for lunch. They wanted Fridays but I steered them away from that. 😊Proposal is for 3 trucks, maybe adding a fourth later if there is good demand, we should be able to get high visibility on Poplar. The library system would market these from their side and us from ours. Library will probably require 15% of gross…

Proposal by Levitt Shell for Sunday Food Truck Rodeos

News
I'm also going to post this to the facebook and the web page, and please forward to any other food truck operators you like in the mid-South, I'd like to get a lot of opinions. Levitt Shell has offered to host small food truck rodeos on Sunday nights starting around June 1 at their concert series. What this basically means is that instead of one or two trucks which they normally have at their Sunday night concert, they would have three or four. Also they probably wouldn't mind if the trucks deployed early so they could function as Sunday lunch rodeos at Overton Park as well, if we do some marketing and signage. The food trucks would have to be down in the "food truck court" area stage left, not…

Vending at UT Health Sciences

News
I know a lot of you vend at UT. Since talking with my friend Derrick Clark, who warned me things might be changing for you at UT, I've been trying to get accurate information about the vending situation there. Having conferred with Pam Houston who is the Special Events Manager at UT Health Sciences, here is the deal: UT is building a food court. They will be renting space to restaurants. Like you see at the mall or at University of Memphis or at many other health care facilities. The timeline is not completely certain but they will probably have the food court completed in late February. From that point forward, food trucks will no longer be welcome near UT facilities anymore on a regular basis. They may do occasional special events and…

MFTA Members Sysco Account

News
It's hard to get Sysco to pay attention to you if you're a food truck, but we've worked out an arrangement with them so all our members have access to Sysco's online catalog and buyer privileges without having to apply for a Sysco account, submit to a credit check etc. We have our own Sysco rep assigned to us, you can call him whenever you need to. When you purchase something you'll pay MFTA with a paper check and we'll pay Sysco. Members will have Sysco pickup three times a week on will-call, Tuesday Thursday and Saturday. Hopefully soon (as part of Ken's plan for worldwide domination) we'll have a commissary which will accept Sysco deliveries without members having to be there, but until then it's will-call. More on this…

City of Memphis Owned Properties/$2MM Liability

News
According to Maria Munoz-Blanco of Memphis Parks and Neighborhoods, it is confirmed that city-owned properties are now requiring $2MM liability policies for new contracts/agreements and park rentals. Parks and Neighborhoods does not actually set insurance requirements, we are going to get a meeting with City of Memphis Risk Management office to be sure this would apply to food truck vending as opposed to concession contracts and park rentals.

Sole Sourcing–What it Means

News
When we meet with event planners we nearly always push to sole source their events--we want Memphis Food Truck Association to book their food trucks. We want them to call us first and let us handle it from that point forward. Just in the past two weeks we have pushed for sole source privileges (with varying degrees of success) at Levitt Shell; Memphis Grizzlies; Rhodes College; Miss Cordelia's; one of the Federal Express (more…)
